As we move forward post COVID and everything that went along with it, we will probably hear the word wellbeing more than ever before. We invited Liam McBride from our fantastic wellbeing partners Whysup to share his thoughts with us on the subject in a guest blog.
Whilst any discussion around wellbeing is a good one, the themes often focus on the positive activities, health and workplace wellbeing. All of the above are relevant and worthy of being explored but before any of that, it is important to look at three other crucial parts of wellbeing.
Responsibility is often overlooked. Any person must first accept they have responsibility for their own wellbeing. It is you who will benefit from taking care of it and only you that can make the decision to do so. Wellbeing strategy and opportunity is only beneficial if the individual takes something from it and then implements positive action in their daily life. There are many things that can impact our wellbeing and some are outside of our control but if we have taken responsibility for the parts we can control, we will be better equipped to handle issues which challenge our wellbeing as and when they present themselves.
Time is often the barrier to doing anything extra in our day-to-day life. We are busier than ever as a society with demands on our time from work, family, friends, social events and other responsibilities. However, if any person or business wants to improve wellbeing, we have to accept that time will be required. I don’t believe wellbeing is complicated and I don’t believe the things that can help are difficult, but I do believe without time being planned they are almost impossible. If you plan time to take care of yourself, it is more likely to happen… simple!
Last but certainly not least, is the one area of wellbeing that is rarely discussed alongside all the diet, yoga and stress management topics we do hear about and this is, consistency. Many people want to take care of themselves and feel better. Some will go as far as to start to implement things but over a period of time the enthusiasm fades, the time gets swallowed up and the consistency falls away. Only when a tough time hits and we feel worse do we stop and realise we did not maintain the positive changes and things slipped away. Be very aware of the fad-diet approach, wanting quick results, going full speed ahead and then eventually being sat wondering what happened to the good habits you had started 3 weeks ago.
Take responsibility, plan the time and approach with a measured dose of consistency. Good wellbeing is achieved over time not overnight!
