Going into work ill is called presenteeism
There’s a 16% drop in productivity per employee
Create a culture where it’s OK to recover
Attendance at work is important, right?
Of course it is, but we’ve all felt ill and gone into work anyway. Maybe it’s because we don’t want to get into trouble, or maybe we just feel the responsibility to our team mates.
Whatever the reason, we drag ourselves out from our sick bed. This is presenteeism.
The reality is, going into work sick means you’re more likely to make costly mistakes and you’re more likely to be ill for longer.
In fact, it’s estimated that presenteeism costs 5 unproductive days per worker per year. That’s 16% of a full-time employee’s working days!
You need to create a culture where it’s OK to take time off to recover from illness and focus the punitive stuff on the questionable absences.
