In a previous blog we discussed the concept and benefits of exit interviews but have you and your business ever considered carrying out stay interviews?
Stay interviews are a fantastic way to interact with your existing team and find out what they love about working for you and also what factors might make them consider moving on. Essentially, you’re trying to get an understanding of all the great things that keep staff happy so that you can do more of them, and find out about the potential niggles so that you can get ahead of them before they become the kind of problems that cause staff to head for the exit.
Stay interviews should be separate from performance related meetings such as 1-1s or appraisals. They should be part of your broader employee engagement and retention activities and ideally should be conducted in a relaxed, informal setting.
Here’s a couple of questions you might want to ask:
- What do you look forward to at work?
- How’s your work life balance?
- What frustrates you at work?
- Tell me about a good day you’ve recently had at work.
- Tell me about a day where things didn’t go so well at work.
- How can I make work better for you?
If you decide to give stay interviews a try then make sure to involve all your staff, everyone has a voice, everyone has different perspectives and the more information you can gather, the better your retention planning will be.
